November 19, 2007I have been meaning to start this website and am so happy to have a moment of free time in order to share our experiences with all of our loved ones. I cannot think of a better way for our friends and families to keep in touch from so far away ... Arizona, Texas, and Washington DC.
We can start at the beautiful beginning, even though, as of today, I am twelve weeks and six days pregnant! Just a few days left until our second trimester! I am ready for the food cravings to kick in!
This pregnancy couldn't have come at a more wonderful time! We had only been off of birth control for one month so we were shocked at how quick our pregnancy happened and are thrilled that it did not take long at all. We have several really close couples who have been trying for a year or more to conceive and so we figured we would start trying sooner than later. We found out we were expecting the Tuesday after Erik turned 37; therefore, the timing was perfect.
Mom and i had gone to dinner that Tuesday night, September 18th, and ran into the owner of the bistro. She had been at our wedding and is a really good friend of our family. She walked up to me and said “oh Natalie, you have a baby!” I immediately laughed and said “no I do not” and she explained that she was just kidding because there was a baby stroller resting against the wall behind mom and i that we had not even seen. We laughed it off but I could not stop thinking about it and wondering if I maybe I should take a pregnancy test. Maybe this was the reason I suddenly had no appetite.
After I left mom and dad’s I went to the store and bought one test thinking there was no way this could have happened so soon and that I should just do one anyway. When I got home Erik was already asleep since he had worked all day and had two softball games that night. I then tip- toed across the house so that I would not wake him up and locked myself in our guest bathroom. Less than two minutes later I was starring at a “Pregnant” symbol that could not have been more bright and clear! I felt like screaming and laughing i was so excited! At the same time I did not feel 100% sure so I snuck out of the house, grabbed the keys to Erik's truck, and then drove to the store and bought 6 more tests and a little package of tiny newborn onsies just in case the other tests were positive too.
I got home and did four more “Yes…you are pregnant you big goof!” tests! I was out-of-my mind thrilled! I decided not to wake Erik up since it was about 12:30 at this time. The next best thing would be to decorate one of the little onsies that said “Surprise Erik…you are going to be a daddy!” and put it on our kitchen counter so he would see it in the morning. I barely slept a wink all night and got up as soon as he got in the shower and made us breakfast. He then came out, saw the onsie, and was went ballistic he was so excited! It was perfect! Needless to say he was a bit late to work that morning!
On that Thursday (2 days after) I went to my doctor, confirmed the pregnancy, and had my first opportunity to ask all my initial questions. I then got a referral to the Ob-gyn that I had been hoping for---Dr. Helene Spivak! It is the same ob-gyn that some girlfriends had and loved. With a huge ease of mind I had some fun that evening and decorated more onsies before wrapping them in cute packages so that we could surprise our parents that weekend.

We went to dinner on that Friday night at mom and dad’s and immediately handed my mom the gift. She sat it down and proceeded to ask me what I would like to drink. Ha ha…I love it...so typical at mom and dad’s house. I had to finally tell her not to worry about the drinks and to open her gift…it was so hilarious! I wish everyone could have seen how excited mom and dad were from the first second they saw the onsie! We chatted and giggled about a new baby all night long and I loved it! Mom has already scoped out all the adorable baby boutiques throughout California, Arizona, and Texas! Lucky for me, and as everyone knows, she has amazingly excellent taste!
The very next morning and went over to Erik’s mom and dad’s. Erik is one out of two boys and there is a chance that Kevan, Erik's little brother, may not decide to go the baby route one day (but, you never know). Needless to say, Erik's parents have been so anxious for grandchildren so it was as if all their dreams had come true. It was really fun to tell them. It is now all anyone can talk about other than the newest baby in our family...Baby Grace Goodrich who is Erik's cousin, Natalie's (husband is Adam), first baby! Erik's cousin, Jill, is also expecting her second child and it will be born in mid to late June 2008- just one month after our baby.
We had both originally agreed not to say anything until i was further along in my pregnancy; however, that did not work so well since we are just to excited to keep it a secret from family and friends! We have had a chance to tell quite a few people, but, as we all know, good news travels fast! Especially throughout the small towns of Sonoma and Petaluma.
At eight weeks and had my first ob-gyn appointment. Erik and I had been so anxious for the appointment since I had not had the “typical” symptoms of being pregnant as far as soreness and morning sickness. My only battle was being really, really tired all the time and not having much of an appetite. After the appointment most of my worries are put to rest. We got to see the our first ultrasound and see the baby’s heartbeat! It was even more precious than i imagined! The ob-gyn and her mid wife answered all of our questions and they were really impressed with how much we both had read so far. I immediately fell in love with them both. It seems like reading baby books and magazines is all i do now and it really pays off to know what everyone is asking and talking about! I already have our baby’s first photos in a frame and i have to get my hands on a scanner that actually works so that I can pass them along! At eight weeks the little baby was about the size of a grape so our family refered to it as our little “Merlot” grape baby! It fits since dad is starting a winery outside of San Lois Obispo and is now in the middle of harvest. I know…we are all a bunch of total goofs. I just wonder why people always compare the size of the fetus/baby to a piece of fruit?
Now at twelve weeks I feel really good but very tired! Still tired and a little bit of a sore back. Still no appetite and I am ready to start wanting food again. I basically have to get everything done in the mornings and at work since i am beat by the end of the day. It is so wonderful to have Erik, who has been so supportive and actually reads and pays attention to what is going on. He will be an amazing dad! He has a list of things to get done around the house before the baby is here. We are painting the entire house (some really amazing colors) because he is convinced that it must be done sooner than later. So funny! He also just bought me a new car...a 2007 Camry (a family car if you will)....that is perfect for our growing family. A big difference from the SUV and it is amazing how your priorities change....leather, car seats, and baby toys are replacing road trips or nights out with the girls, listening to loud music, and riding through the wine country with the windows down.
A big thing for me right now is to wrap up everything here at work! It has been such a wonderful company to work for but life must go on! I have just recently told the company that I will be leaving early to mid May. I have the opportunity to be an at home mom and enjoy every moment I can with our little one. I definitely want to go back to interior design down the road, but am lucky to not have to hurry back to work right away. It will be nice to say goodbye…especially with the hours that I work now and the fact that i have become a bit of a workaholic. I definitely need to learn to slow down and start relaxing a lot more. Once I do return to design, I will focus on being closer to home to be there the moment my family needs me instead of traveling the highway hours everyday. Again, priorities have shifted enormously! Many say I should design from home... we will just have to see what happens!

Other than that, i am just thrilled and anxious to have a little Erik/Natalie in our lives! I had always thought i would want to find out the sex of our child, since i am such a planner and super organized, but i think everyone has talked me out of it. I have been convinced that it will be so exciting to keep it a secret. I sometimes have mixed emotions about it and can definitely see why you would want to find out!
In case you are wondering...I haven't become noticibly pregnant to anyone other than Erik and I. In fact, i have only gained one pound, but i can feel it coming on and will soon have the little "baby bump" that will eventually be larger than I can imagine...can't wait to feel that first movement! To me that is the most exciting!
